The Heritage and Folk Music of Cades Cove, Tennessee

A nicely-done study of the heritage of Cades Cove collected just before the final government evictions. Margaret Elisabeth Gamble submitted this thesis as part of her Master of Music Education degree at the University of Southern California in August of 1947. In it, she describes Cades Cove (including its history, its traditions, and how its isolation has affected its development), presents folk songs she has personally collected from and heard sung by Cades Cove residents, and shares photographs of the Cove, is surrounding areas, its folk singers, and descendants of its original settlers. This manuscript is a photocopy of the original.
